Morley Schloss

Morley Schloss passed away at 82 after battling COVID-19. His work influenced naturist culture and legal boundaries, leaving a legacy in civil liberties. Remembered by family and naturists at Sunsport Gardens and beyond, Morley was born in Cleveland, Ohio, attended Harvard, and became a progressive educator in Rochester, New York. He ran for Congress in 1966, advocating for peace and civil rights.

Morley's naturism journey began at Woodstock in 1969. He founded Naturist Rochester and built an indoor pool for year-round naturist activities. As president of the Eastern Sunbathing Association, he championed progressive reforms and top-free activism. He played a key role in the Rochester Topfree Seven case, leading to a significant legal victory for women's topfreedom in New York State.

Morley was a unifying figure in the naturist community, a trustee of the Naturist Action Committee, and transformed Sunsport Gardens into an inclusive sanctuary. He organized the Mid-Winter Naturist Festival and maintained a national presence in top-free equality campaigns and free beach activism.

Morley's achievements were celebrated in a Naked Age podcast interview in June 2024. He reflected on his contributions to legal battles and community building, emphasizing non-violence and civil disobedience in the spirit of Martin Luther King and Gandhi. His legacy of body freedom and equality continues to inspire the naturist movement and advocates for social justice.

The American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) is proud to announce its new Visible Altruism initiative aimed at accomplishing two main goals: 1) to help individuals, families, and communities with demonstrable need, and 2) to highlight the acts of charity and social good achieved by nudists and naturists. We are reaching out to you to help us in our first endeavor: a nationwide clothing drive for individuals and families who reside in shelters. This should show that when nudists say they will give you the clothes off their backs, they mean it!!

There are numerous shelters for homeless and domestic violence victims listed on the internet. You may already be aware of resources to identify a shelter in your state but here is one resource we feel is particularly useful:  https://www.domesticshelters.org/fundraisers/wish-lists

Please identify a shelter and check what items of clothing are accepted or other items are desired. Then, plan to donate during the week leading up to Labor Day, 2024. Clothing should be clean, lightly worn, appropriate for the area’s weather and in the condition, anyone would be proud to wear. Once you have chosen these items and the recipient shelter, go to nudistsgiveclothing@aanr.com and complete the brief form with the following information:

1. Your preferred identity (Can be initials, first name-last initial, full name, etc.)
2. Your email (for this project only and not to be shared)
3. AANR region (if unsure, check your AANR member card) and State
4. Direct member or Club member and Name of club
5. Number of items of clothing (Shoes, socks, gloves count as 1 piece)
6. Name of shelter

We will collate this information for news and social media, including which region donated the most items! And we thank you for caring for those in need and helping to make this new initiative a success!

As we embrace the warmth of August, let us also acknowledge and celebrate the beauty of diversity, inclusion, and respect that are at the heart of naturism. This month is rich with observances that remind us not just of the world's vibrant tapestry but also of our responsibility toward fostering a community grounded in respect, understanding, and civility.

National Civility Month
All month, let's lead by example, showing how civility is inherent to our naturist principles. Respect for one another's differences and the choice to live freely and openly in harmony with nature are values that should extend beyond our community, promoting a culture of respect and understanding across all spheres of society.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous People (9th)
As naturists, we hold a special kinship with the natural world, a value deeply rooted in indigenous cultures around the globe. Let us use this day to honor and learn from the wisdom, traditions, and practices of indigenous people, recognizing our shared commitment to preserving our natural environment and fostering inclusivity.

Tisha B'Av (12th–13th)
This day of reflection offers us an opportunity to recognize the strength found in the community and the importance of supporting one another through times of sorrow and loss. Let us extend our empathy and solidarity to those observing Tisha B'Av, acknowledging the diverse ways in which communities come together to heal and remember.

International Lefthanders Day (13th)
Celebrating the unique talents and perspectives of left-handers, this day reminds us of the beauty in diversity and the importance of creating inclusive spaces for everyone. Within our naturist spaces, let us ensure we are considering the diverse needs of all our members, including the often-overlooked details that can make everyone feel truly welcome.

World Humanitarian Day (19th)
Our naturist values of respect, equality, and care for our fellow humans align with the essence of World Humanitarian Day. Let's take this day to honor those who work tirelessly to aid others in need and to remind ourselves of the role each of us can play in making the world a kinder, more compassionate place.

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition (23rd)
As we reflect on the harrowing history of the slave trade, let's commit to being agents of change, using the principles of naturism to advocate for freedom, equality, and justice for all people, regardless of race, background, or nationality.

Women’s Equality Day (26th)
Our commitment to naturism includes a deep respect for equality and empowerment. On Women's Equality Day, let us celebrate the strides made towards achieving gender equality while reaffirming our dedication to supporting and uplifting the voices and rights of women within and outside our community.

As we move through this month, let us carry forward the principles of naturism—respect, inclusivity, and a deep connection with nature—into all aspects of our lives. By doing so, we not only enrich our own community but also contribute to a world that values diversity, promotes civility, and celebrates the unique contributions of every individual.

Join Us for the AANR National Convention!

We are thrilled to announce that the AANR National Convention is set to take place from August 12th to 18th, hosted at Shangri La Ranch. This event is a highlight in our naturist community, and we are honored to bring together enthusiasts from across the nation for an extraordinary week.

This year, we have an exciting lineup of activities, educational workshops, and opportunities for bonding and making new friends who share our passion for nudism. The convention is not just an event; it's a place to celebrate our lifestyle, learn, and grow together.

We highly encourage all members to join in and take part in what promises to be an unforgettable experience. Whether you are a long-time naturist or new to the community, this convention is the perfect setting to immerse yourself in the joy and freedom of nudism.

Don't miss this important event. Mark your calendars for August 12th to 18th and prepare for a week of fun, learning, and naturist camaraderie.

We look forward to celebrating with you!

The Appeal of Naturism to Modern Women

In an era defined by the relentless pursuit of style through designer labels and high-end fashion, a quiet but powerful shift is taking place. A growing number of modern women are finding solace and empowerment in a movement that predates the current trends by centuries—naturism. This movement, rooted in the principles of freedom, equality, and a profound connection with nature, offers a stark contrast to the fast-paced, consumer-driven world of fashion. In this exploration, we delve into the reasons behind the growing appeal of naturism to modern women, shedding light on the liberation that comes from ditching designer clothes and embracing a lifestyle devoted to the essentials of being.

The Evolution of Fashion and Feminine Identity

To understand the appeal of naturism, it's essential to examine the evolution of fashion and its impact on feminine identity. Historically, fashion has been both a tool for self-expression and a means of societal conformity. Women, in particular, have navigated a complex landscape, balancing personal style with societal expectations. The 21st century brought with it an explosion of designer brands, each promising uniqueness but often fostering a culture of exclusivity and materialism. This relentless pursuit of the latest trends has not only implications for individual self-esteem but also on a global scale, contributing to unsustainable consumption patterns and environmental degradation.

A Path to Liberation

Naturism, or the practice of social nudity, presents a radical departure from the world of designer labels. At its core, naturism is about returning to a more natural state, free from the societal pressures and constraints imposed by clothing. For many women, the journey towards naturism begins with a desire for liberation from these pressures and a deep-seated need to reconnect with their bodies in a non-sexualized, non-judgmental context. The naturist movement emphasizes equality, respect, and the intrinsic value of the individual, irrespective of their appearance, social status, or possessions.

The Appeal of Naturism to Modern Women

The appeal of naturism to modern women can be attributed to several interrelated factors:

A Quest for Authentic Self-Expression

In contrast to the often superficial self-expression facilitated by fashion, naturism offers a more authentic form of individuality. Stripped of labels and brands, women discover a sense of self that is unmediated by the external trappings of status. This authenticity fosters a deeper connection with oneself and others, promoting a sense of genuine community and belonging.

Liberation from the Beauty Ideal

The beauty industry, closely intertwined with the world of high fashion, perpetuates unrealistic standards of beauty that are both unattainable and limiting. Naturism challenges these norms, promoting a vision of beauty that is diverse, inclusive, and grounded in self-acceptance. Women who embrace naturism often report a significant improvement in body image and self-esteem, liberated from the ceaseless comparison and competition engendered by mainstream beauty ideals.

Environmental and Ethical Considerations

The fashion industry is one of the most polluting and wasteful industries globally, with a considerable environmental footprint. For women who are increasingly concerned about sustainability and ethical consumption, naturism offers a way to reduce their impact significantly. By rejecting the cycle of fast fashion and embracing a lifestyle that values simplicity and sustainability, naturists contribute to a more environmentally friendly and socially responsible world.

The Power of Vulnerability

Nudity, in the context of naturism, is not about exhibitionism but vulnerability. By presenting themselves in their most natural state, women confront their insecurities and fears, challenging societal taboos surrounding the female body. This vulnerability is transformative, fostering a sense of empowerment and freedom that transcends physical nakedness to touch upon deeper issues of identity and self-worth.

Challenges and Misconceptions

Despite its growing appeal, naturism faces challenges and misconceptions. Societal taboos around nudity, deeply ingrained stereotypes, and the sexualization of the female body create barriers to acceptance. Moreover, women considering naturism may face judgment, not only from the broader society but also from friends and family. Overcoming these obstacles requires courage, but the rewards, as testified by countless women who have embraced naturism, are profound.

Beyond Designer Labels, A Journey of Self-Discovery

The appeal of naturism to modern women lies not just in the rejection of designer clothes but in the embrace of a lifestyle that champions authenticity, equality, and a profound connection with nature. In shedding their clothes, women also shed societal expectations, discovering a sense of liberation and empowerment that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. This journey beyond designer labels is, at its heart, a journey of self-discovery—a reclamation of the body, spirit, and the natural world in their most unadorned and powerful forms.

Naturism offers a compelling alternative to the fast-paced, consumer-driven world of fashion, inviting women to explore a path that is not defined by what they wear but by who they are. In a world increasingly cluttered with messages telling women how they should look, what they should wear, and who they should be, the simplicity and authenticity of naturism stand as a beacon of freedom, challenging each of us to reconsider our relationship with our bodies, with nature, and with the very fabric of society.
