Pickleball: The Latest Nudist Craze

What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a racquet sport in which two to four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a polymer perforated ball over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a Badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis with a few modifications. A regulation pickleball court is 22’ x 40’, smaller than a tennis court and therefore perfect for those people getting beyond middle age who find it difficult to run around on a tennis court. Also, the ball is a slightly smaller than normal whiffle ball.

History

Pickleball is an American Original. It was invented a short ferry ride from Seattle on Bainbridge Island, Washington during the summer of 1965. As legend has it, Barney McCallum and his friends, the Pritchards and the Bells, invented the game by accident.  Their kids were bored, and they didn’t have equipment to play badminton, so they used what they had on-hand to play “badminton”, a whiffle ball and table tennis paddles.  They lowered the net and voilà pickleball was born!

Barney started making wood pickleball paddles by hand for friends. In 1972, to keep track of the accounting and taxes, Barney started a small business in Seattle called Pickle-ball Inc. The company made regulation paddles, balls and net systems and the sport grew. Today, thanks to Barney McCallum, pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the world!

Nudist Clubs Discover Pickleball

Pickleball as a nudist sports alternative to tennis began picking up converts around 2005.  As longtime tennis players began dropping out because they were getting a little older, clubs found their numerous tennis courts were not being used as much.  Some clubs converted these courts to volleyball with a few going so far as to tearing up the asphalt and putting in sand.

In 2012, by two nudist couples who discovered the game in Arizona and brought it back home to California to share with friends at Laguna Del Sol. They taped off a portion of a tennis court, rigged up a net and started playing. This new sport attracted attention and soon spare paddles were made available for “newbies” to pick up and learn the game. To keep up with the growing demand, more courts were soon necessary.  Some of the under-used tennis courts were converted. ,Today at Laguna del Sol, there are four beautiful pickleball courts that are fully used every weekend with a group always waiting on the sidelines to play.

To the south, Glen Eden Sun Club in Corona, has three state of the art Pickleball Courts that are always in demand on weekends.  Pickleball is also played at De Anza Springs Nudist Resort and Olive Dell Nudist Ranch in California, as well as Shangri-La Ranch and Mira Vista Park in Arizona.

Depending on the weather, the pickleball players are often a mix of clothed and unclothed people. On a cool day, players may wear a pickleball t-shirt, but when warmed up, players may take it off and just play in their tennis shoes and socks.

Pickleball is easy to learn and can be mastered in a very short time. Check out the rules in our Sports Rules book under Membership/Documents elsewhere on this website.
