Hangin’ Loose: Our Dinner with Jan and Michael

Our Anniversary Story

Noreen and I arrived on Big Island late in the afternoon on a Saturday. We drove up the long and dark driveway, covered by an awning of trees, we were greeted by Michael and Jan standing in front of their main house. They directed us to our Honeymoon Hale yurt. It was well furnished and comfortable and exceptionally unique. A nice size kitchen area and an outdoor shower surrounded by trees and nature. There was also a private Jacuzzi. No wonder this is the most popular rental on the property!

The following morning, you could really appreciate how beautiful the place was as it felt like you were living in the tropical rain forest. Amazing trees, plants, and flowers every place.

Being at Hangin’ Loose really forces you to slow down “Hawaiian style”, to genuinely enjoy life and relax.

A simple pleasure in life was greatly enhanced by being in paradise and surrounded by peace and quiet. Michael and Jan were always accommodating, willing to help us out in any way we needed. They gave us many hot tips on places to go and see. They also made sure we had our privacy on the property.

After a few days, we started doing the tourist things. On Sundays, there is Maku’u Farmers Market, about 3 miles away. This is the place to go for fresh fruit and a variety of other foods. From there we headed to Ahalanui Park, which is a hot spring pool which the ocean flows into it to maintain about a 90-degree temperature.

The following day we hit up the nude beach, Kehena Black Sand Beach. Michael happens to be one of the drum masters every Sunday at the weekly drum circle. This beach features black sand, and it is one of my favorite nude beaches in the world. There are some beautiful cliffs as the back drop to the sand and the ocean. Apparently, it’s a popular spot with local nudists and everyone was very friendly.

As it turned out, we ended up hangin’ out at Hangin’ Loose most of the week. In the evenings, there was a very informal dinner gathering at the bar/pool area. Michael, Jan, would bring to the bar what they cooked for that night, which is almost like a little pot luck. When we learned of this, we would go to the nearby market and grab something to BBQ so we could share.

I must report on days when we were at the pool area, the pet birds talked to us! They speak surprisingly well, and you do understand them. At first, it took us by surprise because we did not expect to hear “Hey…how ya doin” from a bird.

Again, such a relaxed environment to be vacationing at.

You might want to give Hangin’ Loose a visit. Butt only if you really want to relax in paradise!
