AANR-West Fall Festival Packed with Runners,
Tournaments, and Horses

By Jeff Tendick, AANR-West VP

The AANR-West Fall Festival was an incredibly fun experience for all who attended the 3-day event at the Shangri-La Ranch (SLR). The Festival included the third annual Bare Buns 5K Desert Run on Saturday morning. There was a western theme of the weekend, and it was great to see so many guests and residents sport their “country look” with vests and boots….and generally, nothing else.

Here is a diary of the weekend highlights:

Friday, 5:00 PM: The Festival begins with dinner in the Bare Buns Café, serving baked salmon or Cajun fried cod, plus veggies and homemade desert prepared by Fran, our head chef.

Friday, 8 PM: it’s Karaoke Night! Others are playing pool, table tennis, or soaking in the Jacuzzi.

Saturday, 8:00 AM: 73 runners assemble at the starting line near the clubhouse of the newly groomed 3.1-mile course. Countdown: 3-2-1-GO! Even with its early start time, the two laps around the park up and down hills of starkly beautiful desert scenery is still a challenge for the runners. They are welcomed periodically along the way by groups of volunteers offering drinks and music to hasten their pace. The best time across the finish line is 20 minutes 37 seconds, a new record for the course! All the runners receive a special T-shirt, and the winners in each category received a plaque, a gym bag and a water bottle with a Shangri-La logo.

Saturday, 9:30 AM: A team of five horses arrives ready for the next activity - naked horseback riding! Park members and visitors took turns mounting four horses at a time, with an authentic cowboy guide on the fifth horse. Each group of riders gets to ride through a gorgeous trail on the back of a horse bareback – and bare butt!

This was the highlight of the weekend for many of those who attended. Even Horst Kraus, original owner of Shangri-La (and Cyndi’s grandpa) got on a horse and enjoyed the experience!

Saturday, 11:00 AM: Six water volleyball teams from various nudist clubs begin their double elimination play for the next several hours. Each team consists of six players, and the competition was well fought with all close matches.  Eventually, the team from Shangri La Ranch was named champion.  Coolers and water bottles were awarded.

Saturday, 4:00 PM: In Millennium Hall, 18 players start the pool tournament. This event took three hours and there were many spectacular shots taken by all participants in the nine-bracket round robin. The ultimate winner received a one-hour massage.

Saturday, 8:00 PM: DJ’s Broadway Joe and Anita kicked off four hours of great dance music in the clubhouse.

Sunday 8:00 AM:  The morning weather was perfect! 16 players stretch their limbs and get ready for the last tournament of the weekend: Pickleball.  Everyone played a total of 8 games, with each player awarded points as they progressed. We awarded first, second and third place winners who were given cooler bags and water bottles.

We hope everyone will come back again next year!
